A Unique Niche for Photo Scanners
So, it didn’t take long for a few of these coin collecting enthusiasts to figure out how to harness the power of photo scanning technology to enhance the ability of imaging their coinage. According to an Internet forum on the topic; “A coin scan and a coin photo produce quite different results...with the scanner lens, a scanned coin may show hightlights on both sides of a raised area...A scanned coin will show the true shape of the coin because the coin is perfectly flat on the scanner bed.”
Recording coins in a collection with a flatbed scanner, using photographic imaging techniques such as 600 dpi resolution, scanning both sides then pasted together, close cropping and attention to a background (or perhaps absence of one - transparent) that compliments the metal money may make all the difference in bringing the best offer in an auction or sale.
