For a long time Robert Krohn had a secret! The results from his clandestine work would end up forging a lasting impression upon all mankind and end up changing the world...forever!

Robert was in charge of early nuclear tests at what was then called Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. This centralized facility coordinated the scientific research of the Manhattan Project, the Allied project to develop the first nuclear weapons. It wasn’t until 1945 the world witnessed Robert’s secret as “Little Man” fell upon Hiroshima on August 6th, then “Fat Man” was dropped upon Nagasaki 3 days later.

The End of World War ~ The Beginning of A Museum
When the new Laboratory director, Norris Bradbury arrived at LANL, Robert Krohn set out convincing him of the need for a museum to house historical weapons-research artifacts. In 1954, the first Laboratory museum opened its doors to official visitors.

In 1970, the Museum was renamed the Norris E. Bradbury Science Museum, honoring the Laboratory's second director. Eventually, the Museum's official name was shortened to the Bradbury Science Museum. As attendance continued to grow, the Museum began to explore the possibilities of relocating to a site both larger and more easily accessible. In 1993, the Museum moved into its new and present location in the heart of downtown Los Alamos.

Science Matters!
Each year, over 80,000 visitors make their way through the Bradbury Science Museum exhibits that combines extensive use of photographic and multimedia tools. Including;

  • Defense Gallery - Here guests learn about the central mission of the Laboratory to ensure the safety, security, and reliability of the U.S. nuclear deterrent while reducing the global threat of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons.
  • Research Gallery - Here guests get a chance to investigate the Laboratory’s leading-edge research in many areas of science and technology to help solve national problems related to energy, the environment, infrastructure, and health.
  • History Gallery - Guests revisit story of the Manhattan Project and Los Alamos.
