Makin' Memories - A Thing of the Past?

In the 6Sight Magazine's Dec 2011/Jan 2012 edition, author Paul Worthington points out how attitudes towards photographs is changing because of emerging digital technologies.

Worthington states pictures as 'memory keepers' are rapidly being transformed into elements to be shared 'in the moment'. This intersection of imaging and mobility is growing as billions of smart phones, tablets and other mobile technology with on-board camera capability reach the hands of consumers.

However, before launching off into how photography is changing in tomorrow's post, we thought it might be fun to spend a few moments reflecting back on a time when making pictures actually meant making memories...

And, what better way to do it than to turn the clock back to the early 1980’s when Disney World featured a preshow in the Epcot center showing of Magic Journeys that featured the song Makin' Memories.  The song was written by the Sherman Brothers who used its lyrics to paint an array of word pictures of the magic taking photographs had on the general public (plus it didn’t do too badly in promoting the film’s sponsor Kodak, either!).

Feel free to sing along!

Makin' Memories
(Lyrics to Sing-a-Long!)
Long before the old Model T, 'round about the turn of the century,
folks discovered a barrel of fun, takin' pictures by the light of the sun.
Smile!  Hug!  Look at the camera!  Hold your breath and say cheese,
little did they realize back then, they were makin' memories.

Makin' memories, makin'  memories, takin' pictures is makin' memories,
catchin' little pieces of time, makin' 'em yours and makin' 'em mine.
Birthday faces and happy places, we love to hold near and dear,
when we're makin' memories, happy days can reappear.

Then the flappers appeared on the scene, rumble seats and 20 cent gasoline,
radios and Dixieland jazz, Brownie cameras and razz-a-tazz.
Snapshots of the whole family, give that button a squeeze,
little did they realize back then, they were makin' memories.

Makin' memories, makin'  memories, takin' pictures is makin' memories,
catchin' little pieces of time, makin' 'em yours and makin' 'em mine.
Big occasions and celebrations, we can forget in a year,
but when we're makin' memories, happy days can reappear.

Now we shoot whatever we see, night or day in color photography,
candid shots of baby at play, photo finishes, tigers at bay.
Hey don't look into the camera, let's be natural please,
and with every single shot we take, we're makin' memories.

Makin' memories, makin'  memories, takin' pictures is makin' memories,
catchin' little pieces of time, makin' 'em yours and makin' 'em mine.
Great vacations and graduations, we love to hold near and dear,
and when we're makin' memories, happy days can reappear.

One! More! Time!

Makin' memories, makin'  memories, takin' pictures is makin' memories,
catchin' little pieces of time, makin' 'em yours and makin' 'em mine.
Great vacations and celebrations, we love to hold near and dear,
and when we're makin' memories, happy days can reappear.

Look at the birdie!

Digital Camera Scanners Blur Lines In Market & Offer New Affordable Solutions

Consumers are no longer saddled with just a few limited options like flatbed scanning devices for turning their documents, photos or other such materials into a digital state.

Scan Documents, Photos and 3D Objects Using Digital Camera Scanning
Instead, they now have affordable tools being developed that integrate the newly emerging world of high resolution digital camera technology into personal and prosumer scanning.

The result is a rapidly changing scanning market with lines blurring as sophisticated equipment, once reserved for professional scanning organizations, becomes more readily available. It is now easier than ever for individuals to have access to quality scanners that can convert documents, photos and even 3D objects into digital images to be stored, shared, and used to connect with others.

Innovation + Technology = Success!
Pathway Innovations & Technologies, Inc., is leading the way in this fast developing field with its family of HoverCam High Resolution Document Cameras. Designed as a different type of document camera, the HoverCam is the first USB-based device of its kind to deliver high performance and unprecedented affordability in one compact package.

Using a single USB cable, the HoverCam connects the document camera to a PC or Mac, providing full integration with the computer and interactive whiteboard (IAWB). No power cord needed!

Typical concerns with using digital cameras, such as handheld cameras or those found on smart phones, are completely eliminated as the HoverCam maintains reliable color matching, lighting, and precise alignment. The full featured scanning software that comes with each unit provides optical character recognition (OCR), while the Archive Manager allows the user to store, share cloud apps and easily drag-n-drop into any Windows program, such as Powerpoint.

Just Getting Started...
New HoverCam product releases just announced at CES 2012 include a document camera able to scan up to A3 sized materials and automatic book scanner that folds up to the size of small briefcase for on-the-go jobs.

What Kind of Photo Organizer Are You?

Are you assertive, creative, practical, or quiet? Perhaps your personality is a combination of these plus other types.

When You Have Seen One - You Have Seen One!
The National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) is a group of about 4,200 professional organizers dedicated to helping individuals and businesses bring order and efficiency to their lives. NAPO has identified there are no “cookie cutter” solutions for getting organized. Each person must find the system that works best for him or her.

An overview of the sixteen personality types, based on the well-known research of Carl Jung, Katharine C. Briggs, and Isabel Briggs Myers, quickly reveals the many different personality types, work styles, and environmental influences. These impact the way each of us will choose (or not choose!) to organize our photos.

Current State of Affairs
In Save Your Photos ... And Your Sanity!, authors Christine Sutton and Tracey DuBois dedicate a substantial part of their book's introductory portion to ensure success of one's photo organizing by looking at the big picture and considering a number of factors. Doing so creates an organizing system that appeals to your personality and style.

Sutton & DuBois offer a series of questions to get this analyzing process started. They include:

  • What’s the current state of your photo collection?
  • How does this make you feel?
  • When it comes to your family’s photo collection, what’s most important to you?
  • Why do you want to get your photos organized?
More Than A Book...
After looking at the current state of your photo collection, the next step is to create a plan of action. This is where Save Your Photos and Your Sanity! is more than a book and more like a step-by-step course delivered electronically right to your computer so you can get started right away.

Once you’ve taken the time to really evaluate your current situation, your personal work style and your goals for your family’s photographs, then you’ll be able to create a personalized plan of action that will bring you success! The book offers three separate plans of how to go about getting the job done. You can choose the option that most appeals to you, or you can use the ideas as a springboard to create your own customized work plan.

No Excuses!
No matter what your personality type, if you have photos it is time to start getting organized!

Normally priced at $49.95, this how-to-do-it book available through a limited-time introductory offer of just $27, includes a risk free guarantee.

Save Your Photos . . . And Your Sanity!

Overwhelmed Leads To Surrender
Many people feel so overwhelmed by trying to organize their photos that they simply give up. For some people it gets so bad, they actually stop taking pictures because they don’t want to add to the mess!

According to Sutton and DuBois, you’ll never have to worry about this happening to you, once you understand:

  • How to organize your entire photo collection in as little as 10 days, even if you’ve got years and years’ worth of photos and have absolutely no idea where to begin!
  • The top 5 reasons why people put off organizing their photographs, and how to overcome them.
  • How to uncover your unique “organizing profile” and discover which organizing methods will be right for you.
  • The obvious but commonly overlooked secret to drastically reducing the time you need to spend managing your photos. At the very least, this one secret will cut your work time in half!
Getting You Moving in the Right Direction=>>>
With this book, you’ll know exactly what to do, and you’ll be able to enjoy peace of mind knowing that your precious photographs will be safe, once you learn:
  • The best places in your home for storing your photographs, and the 3 places you should absolutely avoid.
  • What acid, lignin, and PVC are, and why they create absolute havoc with your precious photographs.
  • The 5 biggest mistakes that people make in handling their photographs. Are you making them?
  • How to recognize and avoid the photo albums that will DESTROY your precious photos.
  • The meanings behind all of the lingo (ie. archival vs. acid-free) so that you can be sure that the materials you buy will truly protect your precious photographs. You’ll know exactly which terms to trust and which to steer clear of.
  • How to remove your photos from unsafe albums, without destroying them in the process!
  • Discover the ONLY safe method for writing on the back of your photographs. . .
  • How to handle your negatives – Do you even need to keep them, and if so, how should you organize them?
Normally priced at $49.95, the photo organizing pair is making this how-to-do-it book available through a limited-time introductory offer of just $27, which includes a risk free guarantee.

Friday's Video: Electronic Records Archives in Action

The National Archives is now changing the way we take custody of records from federal agencies. We are now using the Electronic Records Archives, or ERA. ERA is not only a system for storing electronic records. We are currently transferring permanent textual records on a daily basis using ERA. The Department of the Navy demonstrates how ERA was used to transfer deck logs to the legal and physical custody of the National Archives.
ERA replaces a paper-based system that could take months.

Kodak’s Reorganization to Facilitate Emergence as Profitable and Sustainable Enterprise

ROCHESTER, NY, January 19, 2012 – Eastman Kodak Company (“Kodak” or the “Company”) announced today that it and its U.S. subsidiaries filed voluntary petitions for chapter 11 business reorganization in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York.

The business reorganization is intended to bolster liquidity in the U.S. and abroad, monetize nonstrategic intellectual property, fairly resolve legacy liabilities, and enable the Company to focus on its most valuable business lines. The Company has made pioneering investments in digital and materials
deposition technologies in recent years, generating approximately 75% of its revenue from digital
businesses in 2011.

Kodak has obtained a fully-committed, $950 million debtor-in-possession credit facility with an 18-month maturity from Citigroup to enhance liquidity and working capital. The credit facility is subject to Court approval and other conditions precedent. The Company believes that it has sufficient liquidity to
operate its business during chapter 11, and to continue the flow of goods and services to its customers
in the ordinary course.

Kodak expects to pay employee wages and benefits and continue customer programs. Subsidiaries outside of the U.S. are not subject to proceedings and will honor all obligations to suppliers, whenever incurred. Kodak and its U.S. subsidiaries will honor all post-petition obligations to suppliers in the
ordinary course.

“Kodak is taking a significant step toward enabling our enterprise to complete its transformation,” said Antonio M. Perez, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “At the same time as we have created our digital business, we have also already effectively exited certain traditional operations, closing 13
manufacturing plants and 130 processing labs, and reducing our workforce by 47,000 since 2003. Now we must complete the transformation by further addressing our cost structure and effectively monetizing non-core IP assets. We look forward to working with our stakeholders to emerge a lean,
world-class, digital imaging and materials science company.”

“After considering the  advantages of chapter 11 at this time, the Board of Directors and the entire senior management team unanimously believe that this is a necessary step and the right thing to do for the future of Kodak,” Mr. Perez continued. “Our goal is to maximize value for stakeholders, including our employees, retirees, creditors, and pension trustees. We are also committed to working with our valued customers.

“Chapter 11 gives us the best opportunities to maximize the value in two critical parts of our technology portfolio: our digital capture patents, which are essential for a wide range of mobile and other consumer electronic devices that capture digital images and have generated over $3 billion of licensing
revenues since 2003, and our breakthrough printing and deposition technologies, which give Kodak a competitive advantage in our growing digital businesses.”

Mr. Perez concluded, “The Board of Directors, the senior management team and I would like to underscore our appreciation for the hard work and loyalty of our employees. Kodak exemplifies a culture of collaboration and innovation.  Our employees embody that culture, and are essential to our
future success.”

Kodak has taken this step after preliminary discussions with key constituencies and intends to work toward a consensual reorganization in the best interests of its stakeholders.  Kodak expects to complete its U.S.-based restructuring during 2013.

The Company and its Board of Directors are being advised by Lazard, FTI Consulting Inc. and Sullivan & Cromwell LLP. In addition, Dominic DiNapoli, Vice Chairman of FTI Consulting, will serve as Chief Restructuring Officer to support the management team as to restructuring matters during the chapter 11 case.

More information about Kodak’s Chapter 11 filing is available on the Internet at www.kodaktransforms.com. Information for suppliers and vendors is available at (800) 544-7009 or (585) 724-6100.

Kodak will be filing monthly operating reports with the Bankruptcy Court and also plans to post these monthly operating reports on the Investor Relations section of Kodak.com. The Company will continue to file quarterly and annual reports with the Securities and Exchange Commission, which will also be available in the Investor Relations section of Kodak.com.

How to Keep Scanned Pictures Around a Long, Long Time

The choice of file format has a direct affect on the performance of the digital image created from your scanned photograph. It also has implications for the long term management of the image.

Planning for the sustainability of digital formats is a one of the important roles the Federal Digitization Initiative Still Imaging Working Group has played. In August 2010, this group published, Technical Guidelines for Digitizing Cultural Heritage Materials, that outlined 14 primary longevity considerations. These included;

DocumentationStabilityMetadata
PresentationComplexityAdoption
ContinuityProtectionCompression Algorithms
InteroperabilityDependenciesSignificant Properties
Ease of PreservationPacking Formats

If you are having your photographs scanned to digital images and want them to last a long time, be sure to consider these factors. For additional information check out; Sustainability of Digital Formats: Planning for Library of Congress Collections.

Generation Y Bolstering Overall Revenue Photo Print Declines

PMA Magazine Article highlightsGen Y and their photo habits
PMA recently released research indicating the photo activities of Generation Y, 18- to 32- year-olds, is leaving a distinct mark upon the photo industry. The predicted decline of retail/onine prints is being offset by an increase in photo-publishing products being led by Generation Y members.

In the November/December 2011 online edition of PMA Magazine – Connecting the Imaging Communities, it is reported this Gen Y group consists of 80 million consumers. They take 1.5 times more photos, upload 2 times as many photos online, email photos 3% more of the time, make 7% mores prints, and own twice as many digital photo frames.

Six Honest Serving Men - Heading to PMA@CES 2012

Prolific poet and author Rudyard Kipling, was a complex man. Yet, in his book the “The Elephant Child”, Kipling unveils one of life’s secrets about how to gain knowledge with six simple words.

As the Digital Directions team prepares to head to PMA@CES 2012, we have set out to look at Kipling's ‘six honest serving men’ from the perspective of news and trends already beginning to hit the street about the upcoming conference.

WHAT do we expect to see?
A new area for startups called Eureka Park should offer an opportunity for nearly 100 start-up companies to feature their coolest new ideas in a unique manner. Being able to leap frog the significant investment required to bring such new innovations to a major tradeshow like CES could jump start some innovations typically restrained by limited financial backing available to start up organizations.

Meanwhile, we expect to see electronic devices that are thinner, smaller, have greater capabilities and connectivity built into them.

WHY do we expect to  this?
The trends in devices are supported by companies who are creating computer components allowing to compute using ever smaller component level parts. Also, industry giants like Google and Microsoft are announcing new operating platforms and software designed to further enhance the mobility of devices.

WHEN do you expect it to happen?
CES 2012 is projected to have 2,700 exhibitors occupying more than 1.8 million square feet of exhibit space. With the high-tech economy on the rebound and growing more confident by the week, we expect to see many of the early adapters beginning to snatch up these latest technological advances starting now.

HOW will it come about?
The era of growing social interaction through the use of technology is lending to enhanced levels of cross pollination across, both within industry and society at large.

This year’s PMA@CES 2012 is a perfect example of how 2 different industry leaders have worked together to deliver a higher degree of service to their member base through collaboration. We believe this trend will continue offering ever expanding opportunities.

WHERE will it happen?
The devices, ideas, and innovations on display at CES 2012 will have as their primary focus the ability to empower the individual permitting them to remain ‘super-connected’ more than ever with other people and their things. We anticipate online, or ‘cloud’ storage options, to be plentiful offering accessibility using new foward-thinking.

WHO will be impacted?
Basically...we believe most everyone!

The New York Times recently reported tablet sales are projected to jump more than fourfold over the next two years, to 71 million worldwide in 2012. Meanwhile, billions of mobile devices are now in the hands of individuals in all corners of the globe, with some countries offering 100 megabit+ connections, at a fraction of U.S. costs.

Bottom line...most everyone, everywhere, are already playing a part in this societal transformation. CES 2012 just opens a new chapter!

About PMA@CES2012
The biggest U.S. tech trade show (officially called the 2012 International CES) will draw an estimated 149,000 attendees to Las Vegas and run from January 10-13, 2012.  This year the Photo Marketing Association International (PMAI) is teaming up with CES by offering concentrated exhibits of photo/imaging products and services. PMA is conducting their annual conference in tandem with 2012 International CES from January 8-13, 2012.

The result will an opportunity to experience the finest in education for photo imaging retailers, chain stores, professional imagers, photographers, and more.

E-Z Photo Scan Our blog's sponsor, E-Z Photo Scan, will be at PMA@CES 2012. Visit their website to learn more about why it is important to scan your photos.
